Three Essential Tips for Attorney Wellness

Lawyers often work long hours, have high levels of stress and face challenging situations on a regular basis. These factors can take a toll on their physical and mental health if they are not properly managed. It is important for lawyers to prioritize their well-being in order to maintain their health, as well as to be able to effectively perform their jobs. This includes things like getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet, and taking breaks to relax and recharge. It may also be helpful for lawyers to find ways to manage stress, such as through meditation, yoga, or therapy. Taking care of their physical and mental health can help lawyers be more productive, focused, and successful in their careers.

  1. Practice self-care. It's important for lawyers to prioritize their own well-being and engage in activities that help them relax and recharge. This can include things like exercise, meditation, and spending time with friends and family. There’s always a trade-off between time and money. If you can afford it and need more time for your own self-care, hire babysitters to watch the kids (or better yet, include the kids in your exercise or yoga routines) and housecleaners to take some of the domestic load off your shoulders.

  2. Set boundaries. Lawyers often have demanding schedules and may feel pressure to be available to clients and colleagues at all times. It's important to set boundaries and make sure you have time for yourself and your personal life. Organize your emails and have your paralegal respond to as many of your emails as possible. It’s ok to say “no” to some things that are not a high priority if you are reaching your limitations.

  3. Seek support. Being a lawyer can be stressful and it's important to have a support system to help you cope. This can include talking to a therapist, joining a support group, or seeking out mentors or colleagues who can provide guidance and encouragement. Talking through a problem with others, and admitting when you need help, can be cathartic to the soul and ultimately bring a better resolution than going at it alone.
